 The First Frost  is a 32-episode Chinese drama that aired from February 18 to March 17, 2025. It is a spin-off of the popular drama Hidden Love. The story follows Sang Yan and Wen Yifan, exploring their school life, love, and how they unexpectedly become roommates after being separated for years.

The drama moves between the past and present, showing their school memories and their current lives. Bai Jingting plays Sang Yan, while Zhang Ruonan portrays Wen Yifan. The First Frost is an e

motional story about love, heartbreak, and healing from the past. It beautifully captures the struggles of young love and personal growth.

And the Second lead couple Qiao who is a caring supporting and mature girl and best friend of Wen Yifan, works as a delivery girl. Xiang Lang is a confident reliable guy and love interest of Qiao. They have their own struggle and their story may not be as playful and bickering as Sang Yan and Wen Yifan’s, but it has its own heartfelt and touching moments.

 

 Episode 1

The story begins with a farewell between Sang Yan and Wen Yifan on a rainy night, marking the end of their high school days.Six years later, Wen-Yifan is now working as a TV reporter, while Sang Yan has become the owner of a bar called Overtime. When Wen-Yifan visits Overtime with her friend, she unexpectedly encounters Sang Yan. However, he introduces himself as if he does not recognize her. Despite this unexpected meeting, their chemistry is still evident especially when Sang Yan offers his coat to Wen-Yifan to cover a cold drink stain on her dress, which was spilled due to a waiter’s mistake.

It is heart-breaking to see Wen-Yifan’s struggles in life, especially when she returns home and faces a difficult situation with her flatmate, who tries to misbehave with her. However, Wen Yifan reports him to the police. But the moment is so devastating  and   we can see why  Wen Yifan is so reserved and distant.  She has gotten used to being alone, not relying on anyone, and keeping her emotions locked away because of her past incident which we will watch later in next episode.

Episode 2

 

After celebrating New Year’s Eve, Wen Yifan is in a good mood, feeling more comfortable around Sang Yan.

But troublemaker from before attacks her again for revenge with his friends, ambushing her when she’s alone. When things take a dangerous turn, Sang Yan rushes in to protect her and fights them off again. However she does not want him to involve in all this. But this time, he doesn’t just stop at scaring them away he makes sure they understand never to mess with Wen Yifan again. One of the most heart touching movement when he went back to her old apartment to check if they had actually installed a hidden camera.  This shows how deeply he cares for her and these little details makes his character so loveable. It is clear that they still have feelings for each other even if they don’t fully accept it yet. Their chemistry is amazing. Wen Yifan, who usually keeps her guard up because of her past.

Episode 3-6

This episode starts with a flashback to Sang Yan and Wen Yifan’s school days, showing their playful yet complicated relationship. The way the story moves between the past and present helps us feel their deep connection, even before they officially meet again. It reminds us that their feelings never really faded.

A big twist happens when Wen Yifan’s roommate moves out, and Sang Yan unexpectedly becomes her new roommate. This change adds excitement and fun to the story as they start living under the same roof, leading to funny and emotional moments.

One of the most touching scenes in this episode is when Sang Yan rushes back to Wen Yifan on New Year’s Eve. She was left alone, feeling sad, but he chose to return to her instead of celebrating elsewhere. They share a meal together, creating a simple yet beautiful moment that shows how much he truly cares for her.

 

 

Episode 7-10

The appearance of Sang Zhi, Sang Yan’s younger sister from Hidden Love, adds a fresh and playful energy to The First Frost. Her personality remains the same sharp, mischievous, and always teasing her brother. She shares funny and embarrassing stories about Sang Yan’s school days, making Wen Yifan laugh and surprise.

However, in the next episode, the story takes a more emotional turn, revealing a hidden struggle Wen Yifan has kept to herself. One night, Sang Yan wakes up and finds Wen Yifan acting strangely. At first, he is confused when she suddenly hugs him, but then he realizes she is sleepwalking. This moment reveals that Wen Yifan has been carrying emotional scars from her past, affecting her even in her sleep. She has been mistreated and traumatized by her own relatives, leaving deep emotional wounds. Their constant emotional and psychological abuse has left her in a state where she struggles to trust people and open up. Her sleepwalking is a direct result of the pain she has buried inside, showing how much her past still haunts her. The First Frost is something many people can relate to. When you have unhealed wounds from the past, they don’t just disappear. They linger in your mind, affecting your thoughts, emotions, and even your daily life.

Sometimes, no matter how much time has passed, a traumatizing past can still haunt you. It may show up in different ways sleepless nights, anxiety, fear, or even something like Wen Yifan’s sleepwalking.

But the funny thing is when next morning Sang Yan teasing her for the what happened the night before and said If you wanted to get close to me, you could’ve just said so.   But she finally shares her sleepwalking habit with Sang Yan, revealing a part of herself that she has been hiding for so long. She admits that it has been happening for years, mostly during times when she feels anxious or unsafe. Now she is slowly letting Sang Yan into her world.
